Critical Reading Series
Critical thinking is a life skill that is important to adult learners. This series is a follow-up to Phasing into the New GED 2002, offering additional strategies, providing additional integrated lessons, presenting formats for different approaches to theme development, and particularly tying the critical thinking strategies/activities to the example themes. In addition to planning integrated themes, studies for adult learners, planning formats for the teacher who starts small and expands each year, and a format for teachers planning family literacy theme studies for both children and adults are presented.

Essential Foundational Employment Skills
This teaching manual is the result of two years of field work and research into employability. Employment skills for ABE/GED and other literacy-level learners are addressed on a basic and fairly universal level to provide a foundation for job advancement. Topics addressed include punctuality, honesty, cleanliness, teamwork, responsibility, flexibility, willingness to learn, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and organizational skills. LD Toolbox
The LD Toolbox provides educators with information and tools for working with individuals with learning disabilities in educational settings. Available LD Toolbox materials include the LD Toolbox manual, the LD Toolbox CD-ROM, the LD Toolbox audiotape, the Dyslexia module, the Multicultural Issues module, and the LD Toolbox videotape.
LD Toolbox Manual
Provides a variety of tips and strategies for addressing multiple learning styles; administering quick assessments; implementing instruction in math, reading, writing, and spelling; using learning aids; fostering self-esteem; and addressing specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, auditory/visual impairments, and ADD/ADHD. (Manual may be ordered separately.)
LD Toolbox CD-ROM
Augments the LD Toolbox manual and allows users to move from level to level at their own pace. Features a graphic interface, live-action demonstrations of teaching situations, and interviews with students and teachers about their perspectives on learning disabilities. (Available in Macintosh or PC-compatible format.)
LD Toolbox Audiotape
Presents the manual in a format accessible to those who are not print oriented.
Dyslexia Module
Covers techniques for tutoring students and overviews dyslexia, addressing definitions, assessment, causes, impact, remediation, and compensation.
Multicultural Issues Module
Links multicultural issues with adult education issues, including learning disabilities, learning differences, and student assessment. Addresses the impact of multicultural backgrounds on learning styles and the ways in which teachers can respond to multicultural considerations.

Literacy Resource Series: Strategies for Adult Learners
The six-book Literacy Resource Series provides teachers and tutors with more than 140 strategies related to beginning reading, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. Each book contains an introduction that provides general information regarding the book's focusÑa theoretical framework that provides a basis for the various strategies included. Each of the strategies has the same descriptive format: The Strategy in a Nutshell, Step-by-Step Procedures, Benefits, Extensions/Modifications, and Notes. The Literacy Resource Series is a companion piece to the popular LD Toolbox. While the LD Toolbox provides a multitude of relatively simple things to keep in mind or to try out, the Literacy Resource Series focuses on strategies and activities for which specific directions for implementation are needed.

New Teachers and Tutors Series
New/Newer Teacher/Tutor Orientation: A Manual for Staff Development
General guidelines for staff development are provided as the introduction to this manual. The first part of the manual focuses on important background issues such as key terms, funding, and services provided as well as a more specific introduction to the Central Illinois Adult Education Service Center. The second part includes such topics as general characteristics of adult learners, discipline in adult education classrooms, a look at assessment, and an overview of teaching. The third section discusses specific strategies in reading, writing, and math and provides examples of integrated lessons. The last section of the manual looks at the specific issues of learning disabilities/difficulties and retention.

Literacy Tutor Manual
This manual is a companion to the Literacy Tutor Training manual. It is geared towards the individual tutor and provides strategies for sessions with adult learners. Key ideas for lesson planning are presented, and there are thirteen attachments for tutors to consult which provide step-by-step procedures for implementing the strategies suggested.

Literacy Tutor Training
This manual is a step-by-step guide for training potential adult literacy tutors. It provides a suggested four-session format with procedures and strategies for ensuring that tutors are well-prepared to handle sessions with adult learners. Each suggested strategy for one-on-one tutoring has a corresponding suggestion for classroom modification. The first session focuses on general concepts about adult learners and tutors, presents introductory activities and very informal assessment activities for tutors to try, and discusses journaling and the importance of building a sense of community. Five flexible strategies are introduced in the second session; these are specifically geared towards narrative texts. Required assessments and core materials are discussed during the third session, and six flexible strategies are presented which are specifically helpful for classroom tutors using informational texts. Lesson planning is covered in the final session.
