The following list of CIAESC on-site workshops has been prepared based on assessed needs and requests received from adult education program personnel. CIAESC Resource Specialists will customize these presentations and/or create new presentations as required to meet additional program staff development needs. The workshops can be prepared to fit the time frame needs of programs and can be presented as individual workshops or combined to create multiple topic presentations.

ABE Math Manipulatives
During this hands-on workshop, participants will use manipulatives to explore beginning math topics, fractions, and decimals. Participants will learn and share ideas for integrating these and other math concepts throughout the ABE curriculum-and receive copies of materials to duplicate and use in their class.
Active Vocabulary Learning - No Drills Allowed
Vocabulary: all words, some words, what words to teach? When? Where? Why? How? Developing a rich vocabulary is an important part of reading. No more copying words ten times and using them in complete sentences. Vocabulary building is an active sport. All levels and all subjects apply.
Administering the BEST Literacy and CELSA Tests
In this training participants will learn how to administer and score the BEST Literacy Test. Participants will practice scoring the test, learn how to use the writing sample rubric, and receive samples to use in their classroom. Information regarding corresponding NRS levels and the BEST Plus test will also be discussed.
Analyzing NRS Data Using Excel
So you've downloaded your data from the ftp site. Now what? During this hands-on computer session, participants will review how to get information off of the ftp site, input the ftp data into pre-constructed Excel worksheets, examine the data trends illustrated by accompanying Excel charts, and save worksheets for future updates and analyses. Participants will receive computer templates and instructions for use with program data.
Beginning Literacy for ABE Teachers
During this workshop, participants will practice word-based activities that help learners to analyze words, place them into long-term memory, build vocabulary, and increase comprehension.
BEST Plus
The BEST Plus is a computer-adapted oral proficiency assessment on CD administered as a face-to-face oral interview. The test items reflect everyday American life at home, at work, and in the community. Training will include an overview of the BEST Plus; video examples of the test as it is administered to adult English learners; scoring exercises, with explanations of why learner language is scored at a given level on the scoring rubric; and administration practice on computers with partners.

There is a lot about Illinois archaeology to really "dig"! When we think about American history, places come to mind like Plymouth Rock, Philadelphia, or maybe the "wild" West. But, did you know that Illinois had a rich history long before Columbus showed up on American soil? Join us and learn how archaeology can bring history to life in the classroom.
ESL for Teachers and Tutors
During this workshop, participants will review information about learner characteristics, ESL approaches, time-efficient activities, and oral language and literacy activities. Background will be provided regarding diversity, language learning, and ESL research. Participants will receive ready-to-use materials that can be used both in the classroom and with tutors.
ESL Potpourri
Vocabulary is one ingredient of our special recipe that has many textures and uses for a variety of levels. The Kim Game is a fun and mysterious game utilizing group work, conversation, and problem solving. The last ingredient in this potpourri is a collection of conversation games about weddings, food, and customs.
From Plays to Def Poetry: Performance in ABE/GED Classrooms
Plays and, yes, poems are meant to be heard! Learn how oral reading can improve reading fluency and comprehension as well as teach content across the ABE and GED curriculum. Practice techniques for creating and performing read-alouds, choral reading, readers theatre, plays and poetry, and take back classroom-ready resources. No acting experience required!
GED Math
This workshop explores a variety of ways to teach the higher level math skills that students need to pass the test. Teachers will receive worksheets and other helpful hands-on materials to assist in teaching math to their students.
Goal Setting
Helping your students set realistic, yet encouraging goals is a challenge. During this workshop, participants will discuss the importance of appropriate goal setting to the student, teacher, and program. Various goal setting and feedback techniques will be reviewed. Ready-to-use materials and activities will be shared. Plan to come and have fun!

Graphs, Charts, and Maps
Success on the GED test depends heavily on a student's ability to understand and interpret the information provided in graph, chart, and map form. This workshop will explore ways to teach these skills to students as well as provide tools for use in the classroom. Hands-On Science
Wondering how to better prepare your students for the Science test? Want to learn more about the National Science Education Standards? Are you out of science ideas and want examples of integrating science across the curriculum? Come join the review, and then experience some inexpensive hands-on science ideas that are integrated across the content areas.
Hands-On TABE 7/8
During this workshop, participants will learn about the TABE forms 7 and 8. Appropriate placement based upon the results, post-testing, and diagnostics will be discussed and practiced. In addition, TABE issues with regard to both performance funding and NRS will be reviewed.

Horizon WIMBA Walk-Through
Horizon WIMBA is an exciting new form of virtual classroom. Using WIMBA, participants can work from their office, their kitchen, or even their patio! Wimba allows for audio chat, text chat, and visual presentations. During this introductory session, participants will confirm their computer's ability to participate in future WIMBA events, learn how to navigate around the Horizon WIMBA learning tool, and practice communicating with others through Horizon WIMBA. To participate in this session, users will need to download, run, and successfully complete the Horizon WIMBA Setup Wizard at www.openroom.horizonwimba.com. Idioms for ESL and ABE/GED. Wuz 'at mean?
Native and non-native speakers in adult education are confused by generally used idioms. We will see the favorite strategies and activities used by Central Illinois teachers. We will pig out, be Good Samaritans, and be all eyes to fun and useful ways of learning idioms! Online using Horizon WIMBA.
Metacognition: Thinking About Thinking
During this workshop, participants will learn many practical ideas to help the ABE and GED learner to become more effective independent learners. Participants will experience a sampling of activities that explores metacognitive thinking across the curriculum, discover ways to encourage students to self-evaluate, and develop lessons to encourage students to think more metacognitively.
Microsoft Potpourri
This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of Microsoft Office programs -Word, Excel, and Publisher. Word topics will include pull-down manus and toolbars, basic editing techniques, saving and printing documents, formatting text and more. Excel topics will include spreadsheet basics and design, using labels, values, and formulas. Publisher topics will include creating flyers and other office documents using Wizards, Templates and from scratch.
Microsoft Academy: Excel
This workshop will introduce participants to the power of spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel. Morning topics will include spreadsheet basics and design. Afternoon topics will include using the toolbar, creating, formatting, and printing worksheets. Also covered will be using labels, values and formulas.
Microsoft Academy: Publisher
This workshop will introduce participants to Microsoft Publisher. With MS Publisher the user can create colorful fliers, calendars, greeting cards, brochures, award certificates, etc., etc., etc. These, and many other documents, can be created using the help of Wizards or Templates. The adventurous computer user can even learn to make creations from scratch.
Microsoft Academy: Word
This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of word processing using Microsoft Word. Morning topics will include pull-down menus and toolbar, basic editing techniques, saving and printing documents, formatting text and more. During the afternoon, participants will cover topics including performing time-saving mail merges, creating labels, and working with tables.

Learn three instructional strategies recommended by the GED Testing Service to help non- and near passers improve their essay writing skills; how candidates performed in the areas of organization, sentence structure, usage and mechanics; and what specific difficulties candidates encountered on the Language Arts Writing tests.
Multi-Level Classrooms
All adult education classes are multi-level to some degree - some to a very high degree! Most educators try to meet everyone's needs by choosing either an independent learning or a cooperative learning approach (or a combination of the two). Although the workshop explores how independent learning can be authentic and engaging for the student, the focus is on a variety of structures and activities for cooperative, small-group work and on how adult learners at different ability levels can engage in the same basic learning activities.
New (Newer) Teacher Orientation - Teaching Adult Learners
Using a simulated lesson on liberty and justice, this workshop introduces teachers to (1) characteristics of adult learners and adult learner classrooms, (2) learning styles and goal-setting, (3) materials to supplement core texts and a variety of instructional activities, (4) organization of instruction, (5) specific assistance for the least able readers, and (6) formal and informal assessment.
Performing What If Data Analysis Using Excel
During this Horizon WIMBA session, participants will learn several ways to use Excel to perform What if analysis. They will understand which way is most appropriate for various situations and use Goal Seek to assist in budget preparation. Prior participation in a Horizon Wimba Walk-Through session is strongly suggested!
Picture Book Boxes
Children's books aren't just for children anymore! Sample the new "Picture Book Boxes" developed by CIAESC, each containing multiple copies of five to eight quality children's picture books, activities, lesson plans, resources and correlations to GED curricula. Take back classroom-ready units designed to improve literacy skills and provide supplemental content in ABE-GED classrooms!
Picture Story Phonics
Picture Story Phonics is a research-based holistic program to help beginning readers (ABE or ESL) learn letter sound correspondences. The Picture Story Phonics material, can be used with the teacher or tutor reading the script or with the student working independently. Participants in this session will be introduced to Picture Story Phonics program, practice using the Picture Story Phonics materials, and receive materials to be used in their classroom.

Harry Potter: What's the big Harry deal? Investigate how to use these rich and powerful stories as an interdisciplinary tool in the classroom. Discover resources already made for teachers. Explore how to use these stories as a way to bring reading into families. Stop in at Platform 9 3/4 for more.
The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963: Christopher Paul Curtis' alternately hilarious and deeply moving novel blends the fictional account of an African American family with the factual events of the violent summer of 1963. An interdisciplinary method for teaching about the 1960s through this book, videos, and made for teacher plans and activities.
Reading 1 - the Mystery of Assessment
This workshop will show how to give a short reading assessment that will provide a wealth of diagnostic information. Participants will learn about the four components of reading. Then, they will practice using practical tests for the first component, which includes phonological awareness, word identification, and spelling.
Reading 2 - the Mystery of Assessment
Do you want to become a Sherlock Holmes Investigator in Reading? In this workshop, participants will review the clues discovered in Reading Assessment 1; the four components of reading, how to observe passage reading, and fluency. Then, they will move forward and learn how to observe retellings, how to view vocabulary, and how to determine readability. Finally, they will look at strategies and activities to promote improvement. (There is no mystery to what all the terms mean, all will be explained.) This is the follow-up to Reading 1 Workshop. However, prior participation in the Reading 1 workshop is not required.
Reading 3 - the Mystery of Assessment
During this workshop, participants will learn about Alphabetics observation. What does a student do with the endings, beginnings, and middle of words? How familiar are the letter-sound correspondences? Does the student know vowels and consonants? What about consonant combinations or vowel combinations? Can the student rhyme? These are all questions the up-and-coming Sherlock Holmes participants will learn to ask. When they discover the answers to some of these questions are "no" we will determine strategies and activities to help students become stronger readers. You do not have to attend Reading Assessments 1 or 2 in order to attend this. This is the follow-up to Reading workshops 1 and 2. However, prior participation in the Reading workshops is not required.
Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum
Learn and think. That's what GED students need to be able to do and do well. We will demonstrate activities you can take with you that will use reading and writing as tools for learning in all content areas at any level. Math too!

Science is a big part of our daily lives and we are a big part of science. Come learn how what we do everyday can make a difference in the world we live in. Throw in some math, language arts, and hands-on activities-and you will leave this workshop with ready-to-go lesson ideas and worksheets for your classroom.
Score! Writing for the GED Essay
Using training materials from the GED Testing Service and other resources, participants will learn what a 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-point essay "looks like" to an essay scorer, get ideas to help students become skilled at scoring their own essays, and study the secrets to writing a score-4 essay.
Shaking Up Science!
Analysis of the GED 2002 test results conclude that chemistry and physics are the content areas on which questions are most frequently missed. Also, knowledge of the scientific method and a solid vocabulary base are necessary for success on the Science test. This workshop offers ideas for teaching the basics in a fun, interesting, hands-on manner. Show students that there really isn't anything to fear about science!

Many common and some not-so-common tools help special learning needs students read and do math. Accompanying these tools in this update are many ways to help students organize information, activities to help them learn, and ideas to help them remember what they have learned over time.

Looking for ideas on how to manage the internet in the classroom? This workshop will explore online resources suitable for use in the adult education classroom and the process of creating a customized homepage. Technology is supposed to be an exciting tool for enhancing the learning experience! This workshop will explore ways to help make it so. Working with reluctant computer users, getting the class to click at the same place at the same time, avoiding common technical problems, and much, much more will be discussed.

Using Children's Literature in the Adult Education Classroom

Learn how you can use quality children's picture books with adults to teach everything from "good reader" strategies and life skills in the ABE and ESL classrooms to content in the GED curriculum. Workplace Skills - Integration and Lesson Planning
Integrating a workforce orientation into the teaching of academic content and skills is a schoolwork connection that ANY adult educator can make. In this workshop participants will learn possible applications to workplace experiences as they teach reading, writing, and math. Sometimes this involves making "workplace ties" as you teach content activity; sometimes it involves looking at a learning strategy you want to teach and using workplace information as the vehicle for teaching.
Workplace Skills Across the Curriculum - Food Service
One of the objectives of Adult Education is assisting students to become better employees. We saw this recently in our NRS trainings. With so many demands already on the time teachers have with students, it is difficult to imagine how workplace skills can be included. However, this workshop will show teachers how they can incorporate work skills into reading, writing, social studies, science, and math. One of the fields that many of our students find themselves in is food service. Whether spending a few months or many years handling food, it is valuable to know the basics of food sanitation. This is pertinent background knowledge whether applying for a job at McDonalds or preparing a meal for family.
Workplace Skills Across the Curriculum - The Green Industry
One of the fields that many of our students will be able to find jobs is what the insiders call the "green industry." The green industry encompasses greenhouse and nursery workers, groundskeepers, landscaping contractors, and other areas of horticulture. In Illinois alone, the greenhouse/nursery business was the fifth highest grossing commodity exceeding $254 million in receipts for 2002. Come to the workshop and learn how to teach your students the content areas in "green."
