Lesson Plans

Education has changed in many ways in recent years. More emphasis is now placed on the practical applications of education; in the workplace, in our daily lives and in the way we understand our world. Critical thinking skills have come into greater focus as we realize that our students need more than fact-based learning, they need to learn to constructively problem-solve. They need to be able to critically think about their opportunities, make decisions based on a variety of factors, and evaluate their decisions so as to increase their successful decision-making in the future.

Critical thinking skills education requires that students be engaged in their learning. Students who actively participate in learning are responsible for their own learning. They are intrinsically motivated, and learn collaborative skills that can transfer to the workplace. Engaged learners gain the skills to solve problems creatively, a lifelong strength for anyone.

The sample lessons provided in this section fall under three themes

By clicking on the theme title you can access the topics which are addressed under each theme, a sample lesson under that them, and links for all of the lessons.

The World We Work In Lesson Plans

The integration of curriculum areas into workplace education.

The World We Inherited Lesson Plans

The integration of curriculum areas into government, history and environment.

The World We Live In Lesson Plans

The integration of curriculum areas of life skills (self-esteem, communication, and consumer issues).

CIAESC has developed these 3 themes, each theme has several detailed integrated lessons accompanying it which address critical thinking. Planning tips, teaching strategies, and assessment options will also be presented in a way that focuses on integrating all content areas across the curriculum. See the Lesson Plan Organizer (PDF) for an overview of how the lessons are formatted.
