Rule #1. Proper Nouns

Always capitalize proper nouns. This includes specific persons, places, and things.

  • Mr. Lee, Mrs. Johnson, Janet Moldenhauer
  • Chicago, White Oak Park, Africa
  • Ford Taurus, Mitsubishi Motors, Sommerville High School

Never capitalize common nouns. This includes nonspecific persons, places, or things.

  • teacher, friend, sister
  • city, park, continent
  • car, plant, school

You can understand the difference between common (general) and proper (specific) nouns by doing the following activity.

Match each common noun with the proper noun that fits it. Drag and drop the proper noun from the word bank below on the blank next to its common counterpart.
